Manual/CNC Bending vs. Stamping – When to Choose What?
In manufacturing, choosing the right sheet metal forming process can make or break your project's cost, timeline, and quality.
Manual or CNC Press Brake Bending (often for prototypes/small batches):
• Low/no custom tooling costs – use standard dies.
• Highly flexible for design changes and custom parts.
• Ideal for low to medium volumes (prototypes up to a few thousand units).
• Faster setup and lead times for small runs.
• Great for simple to moderately complex bends.
Progressive or Die Stamping (for scale production):
• High initial tooling investment (custom dies can cost thousands).
• Extremely fast production rates once set up.
• Superior consistency, precision, and lower per-part cost at high volumes.
• Best for complex features (punches, embossing, deep draws) in one operation.
• Perfect for mass production (10,000+ units).
The classic tradeoff:
Bending wins on upfront cost and flexibility; stamping dominates on unit cost at scale. Break-even often around 1,000–5,000 parts, depending on complexity.
