Understanding Cycle Time – A Simple & Practical Explanation
Cycle Time is a critical performance metric in manufacturing and operations. It tells us how long it takes to produce one unit at a workstation and directly impacts productivity, capacity planning, and delivery performance.
Cycle Time Formula: Cycle Time (per unit) = Total process time / Total units produced
Example from the image:
- A CNC machine produces 90 units in 1 hour (60 minutes)
- Cycle Time = 60 / 90
- CT = 0.67 minutes ≈ 40 seconds per unit
This means the machine completes one finished part every 40 seconds under stable conditions.
Why Cycle Time Matters:
• Helps identify bottlenecks
• Improves line balancing
• Supports OEE & productivity improvement
• Essential for lean manufacturing & continuous improvement
